Bouthéon Castle

Château de Bouthéon is one of the most iconic landmarks of the Forez plain, located near the current town hall of Andrézieux-Bouthéon. Once overlooking the banks of the Loire River, the château boasts a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Originally a medieval fortress belonging to the Counts of Forez, it gradually evolved over the centuries into an elegant Renaissance residence and later into a prestigious estate.

The château belonged to several important noble families, including the La Fayette, Bourbon and Gadagne families. The latter left a strong mark on the estate during the 16th century by developing the gardens, vineyards and ceremonial buildings. Today, its architecture blends several styles, from medieval to neo-Gothic, reflecting the many transformations it has undergone throughout its history.

After periods of decline and restoration, the town of Andrézieux-Bouthéon purchased the estate in 1995 in order to preserve and enhance it. Now open to the public, the château has become one of the Loire region’s major cultural and tourist attractions. Visitors can discover exhibition spaces, an aquarium dedicated to the Loire River, an animal and botanical park, as well as rooms designed for events and seminars.

Today, the château stands both as a symbol of the town’s historical heritage and as a lively place where history, nature and culture come together.
